New benefit period

When the benefit days in a period run out, you can receive a new benefit period if you meet an income requirement. The rules for the income requirement and the compensation you can receive are found in the unemployment insurance regulations that came into force in October 2025. If you do not meet an income requirement, you must talk to the Public Employment Service about participating in the Job and Development Guarantee. If this becomes relevant, you must continue to be a member of the unemployment fund; otherwise, the compensation will be significantly reduced.

Decision before 1 October 2025

This information applies to you if you received a decision on benefits before 1 October 2025.

50 days left – we assess an income requirement

When you have received unemployment benefits for 250 days, the unemployment fund checks whether there is sufficient income for you to receive a new benefit period. The assessment must be made according to the unemployment insurance regulations that came into force on 1 October 2025. These regulations must also be applied to the compensation level and the length of the new benefit period.

Extra days if you have children under 18

If you have received 150 extra days because you have children under 18, the assessment of the income requirement is made when 400 days have been paid out.

The possibility of receiving extra days for children under 18 only applies to those who have met the work requirement according to the rules that applied before October 2025. If you receive compensation under the old rules and have children under 18 but have not yet received 150 extra days, the period is automatically extended by 150 days when the 300th day is paid out. When 50 days then remain, an assessment is made to determine whether an income requirement is met.

The income requirement

To meet the income requirement, at least 4 months with an income of 11,000 kronor and a total income of at least 120,000 kronor during the reference period are required.

Compensation level in the new period

The compensation in the new period can be calculated in two ways. We choose the option that is most beneficial for the unemployed person.

The compensation level is calculated according to either 1 or 2:

  1. 95 percent of the most recently determined compensation level. If you have received compensation under the previous unemployment insurance, the old daily allowance is recalculated into an average monthly income.

  2. 80 percent of the income qualifying for compensation.

Length of the compensation period

The length of the compensation period depends on how many months during the reference period you have earned at least 11,000 kronor — the more months with income, the longer the period. For a period of 300 days, 11 months or more with at least 11,000 kronor per month in salary during the reference period are required.

A new compensation period begins with a qualifying deduction

If you meet a new work requirement, you are entitled to another benefit period. The new period begins with a qualifying deduction corresponding to the value of two benefit days.

No income requirement – contact Arbetsförmedlingen

If you have not met an income requirement, we will notify you. You must then immediately contact your employment officer to discuss whether you should participate in the Job and Development Guarantee. Participation in the Job and Development Guarantee (JOB) is decided byArbetsförmedlingen and entitles you to activity support from Försäkringskassan. This only applies on the condition that you continue to be a member of the unemployment fund.
