Studying or conducting research abroad

If you plan to study or conduct research abroad, it is important to understand how your membership in the unemployment insurance fund may be affected. The rules vary depending on whether you are studying full-time, part-time, or are a doctoral student/postdoc. Here, we guide you through the process.

I will study full-time abroad

If you are studying full-time abroad, you should remain a member of the unemployment fund. If you need to apply for benefits when you return, we can calculate your eligibility based on the work you did before your full-time studies

I will study part-time abroad

If you are studying part-time abroad for more than 6 months, you may end your membership in the unemployment fund. Contact us so we can review your case.

I will pursue a PhD/postdoc abroad

Pursuing a PhD or postdoc is considered full-time studies if you are funded solely by a scholarship. In that case, you should remain a member of the unemployment fund. When you return to Sweden, we can calculate your eligibility based on the work you did before your time abroad. If you receive a salary, you should end your membership with us.
