Applying for unemployment benefits when you are no longer entitled to sickness benefits
To receive unemployment benefits, you must have work capacity—that is, be able to take a job on the labor market. For example, you must be able to apply for jobs, attend meetings with Arbetsförmedlingen, and participate in job-seeking activities. If you consider yourself too ill to work, you are not eligible for unemployment benefits. Feel free to call us if you have questions about your eligibility after being denied sickness benefits.
Leave of absence due to health reasons
If you have a job that you cannot return to for health reasons, you may still be eligible for unemployment benefits despite being employed.
The conditions are:
You have been granted unpaid leave, meaning you are not working and are not entitled to salary from your employer
Due to health reasons, you cannot return to your previous job or take on another role with your employer
Försäkringskassan has assessed that you have work capacity in relation to the general labor market
You have work capacity
If Försäkringskassan has determined that you can seek work in other fields, it is important that you also believe you have work capacity and can take a job. If you believe you are completely unable to work, you cannot receive benefits. A basic requirement for receiving unemployment benefits is that you are registered with Arbetsförmedlingen and actively seeking work.
