Voluntary resignation

Even if you resign from your job, you may still be eligible for unemployment benefits. For most people, this means first serving 45 disqualification days, followed by 2 mandatory waiting days before the benefit period begins.

To receive the highest possible benefit and to start counting the suspension days, you must register with Arbetsförmedlingen on the first weekday after your employment ends. You must also continuously submit time reports to us. There are reasons that may exempt you from a suspension, primarily documented health or family reasons.

Benefits after 45 + 2 days

If you resign from your job, you are usually suspended for 45 benefit days, which corresponds to 9 weeks if you are unemployed full-time. The same applies if you choose to leave a labor market program without valid reason. A maximum of five suspension days per week can be counted.

After being unemployed and suspended for 45 days, you must complete two mandatory waiting days before benefits can begin to be paid. Neither the 45 suspension days nor the 2 waiting days are deducted from the 300-day benefit period.

What counts as a suspension day?

Suspension days are a sanction intended to be noticeable. Therefore, days when you receive benefits from another source or are not unemployed do not count toward the suspension period—for example, vacation, parental leave, illness, or if you are not registered with Arbetsförmedlingen.

Days that count are those when you have either:

  • Been registered with Arbetsförmedlingen and were fully or partially unemployed, or

  • Worked at least three hours

A maximum of five days per week can be counted.

Maximum suspension: 112 calendar days

If the days cannot be counted, the suspension is postponed. After 112 calendar days from the last day of employment, the suspension is lifted regardless of whether all suspension days have been completed.

Reasons to avoid suspension

There are certain reasons that exempt you from suspension when you resign. These are referred to as valid reasons in the conditions. Valid reasons include:

  • Salary: You do not receive your agreed salary

  • Health: You have a medical certificate stating that your work is making you ill and reassignment by the employer is not possible

  • Bullying and harassment: You are being bullied or harassed at work, and despite efforts at the workplace, such as reassignment, the issues have not been resolved

  • End of part-time benefit weeks: You resign because your part-time benefit weeks have run out and your part-time salary is lower than full unemployment benefits (your monthly salary is lower if it is less than your daily benefit multiplied by 22)

  • Relocation of home or workplace: Generally, you are expected to commute weekly until you find a more suitable job. To avoid suspension, commuting must be impossible due to family circumstances

Family reasons and relocation

If you resign due to relocation of home or workplace, you are expected to commute daily or weekly until you find a more suitable job. To avoid suspension, commuting must be impossible due to family circumstances.

If you move because your partner—whom you have young children with—has received a permanent position or started a business in another location beyond commuting distance, you will not be suspended. A probationary position is treated the same as a permanent one. This may also apply to longer fixed-term positions, such as an AT or PTP position. “Beyond commuting distance” generally means more than twelve hours of total daily absence from home.

You may also avoid suspension if you have older children and there are reasons that make commuting impossible—for example, if the child has documented needs that prevent them from living with only one parent, and the circumstances make it inappropriate to split the family.

Provide documentation for your reasons

To avoid suspension, you must be able to document your reasons. You must always submit information showing that reassignment was considered and not possible with your employer.

  • If you resigned for health reasons, upload a medical certificate where the doctor assesses the suitability of the work from a medical perspective and confirms that the resignation was recommended by the doctor

  • If you were bullied or harassed, provide a brief personal account of what happened and support it with documentation, such as a written statement from a manager, colleague, or union representative who is aware of the situation

Income insurance usually does not apply

Most income insurance policies do not apply if you resign and are suspended from benefits. Contact your union or insurance provider to find out what rules apply.
