After working abroad

Welcome to Sweden! If you’ve recently worked in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland and are now unemployed or at risk of becoming unemployed, it’s important to apply for membership in Akademikernas a-kassa as soon as possible and register with the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) on your first day of unemployment. Feel free to contact us even before your job abroad ends – we’ll help you request the necessary certificates to verify your previous employment and insurance periods according to EU coordination rules.

Start with membership and Arbetsförmedlingen

  1. Apply for membership as soon as possible – preferably even before returning to Sweden.

  2. Register with Arbetsförmedlingen on your first day of unemployment. It cannot be done retroactively.

Apply for benefits

  1. Fill in the forms Apply for benefits and Determination of country of residence in Mina sidor.

  2. Send us the necessary information so we can contact your country of employment. We will receive confirmation of your working time and salary through a coordination certificate.

We help you apply for the certificate

Below you’ll find information about which documents each country of employment requires in order to issue the coordination certificate. Compile the information and upload it in Mina sidor, and we will contact the country of employment.

If you have worked in a country not listed below, contact us at 08-412 33 00 and we will assist you. We are open every weekday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

How we calculate your benefit

I have only worked in the EU/EEA during the time frame period

Your average weekly working hours are calculated based on how much you have worked during the past twelve months. Different countries have different standards for full-time work. If you have worked full-time, we count it as 40 hours per week. If you have worked part-time, we adjust it proportionally to a 40-hour week. For hourly employment, the actual hours worked are counted.

Your daily benefit qualifying income is based on the income from your most recent employment, as reported on the PDU1 certificate. Sometimes the monthly salary is stated, and sometimes a lump sum for the entire employment period. In the latter case, we divide the total amount by the time worked to calculate a monthly salary.

I have worked both in Sweden and within the EU/EEA during the time frame period

Your average weekly working hours are calculated based on how much you have worked during the past twelve months. Different countries have different standards for full-time work. If you have worked full-time, we count it as 40 hours per week. If you have worked part-time, we adjust it proportionally to a 40-hour week. Your daily benefit qualifying income is calculated only based on the income from your most recent employment before becoming unemployed, regardless of whether this income comes from Swedish or foreign employment.
