About the membership

At Akademikernas a-kassa, you can insure your income if you are – or aim to become – an academic. It doesn’t matter if you’re employed, self-employed, or a student – as long as you live and have worked in Sweden, you can join. Even short-term jobs count. And you don’t need to switch funds if you change careers – with us, it’s your education that matters.

Why you should join

  • You can receive up to 80 % of your previous income if you lose your job.

  • You qualify based on work done up to six years back.

  • You get fast and personal service from Sweden’s most accessible unemployment fund.

For those who are or soon will be academics

You can become a member if you live in Sweden and have worked here – regardless of your type of employment, industry, or if you’re self-employed. Even short-term jobs count. To qualify for membership, you must be an academic or aiming to become one.

Work requirement – for everyone

If you live and work or have worked in Sweden, you’re entitled to join the unemployment fund. You don’t need to be working right now – previous employment also counts.

  • The type of employment doesn’t matter.

  • Even short-term jobs like summer work or weekend gigs count.

  • Of course, self-employed individuals can also become members.

Your industry doesn’t matter – if you switch from being a teacher to a train driver, you can still stay with us. It’s your education that counts.

Academic requirement – for us

To become a member of Akademikernas a-kassa, you need to have a university-level education. You meet this requirement if any of the following apply:

  • You have a foreign university degree or other background equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

  • You already have 150 higher education credits (högskolepoäng).

  • You completed your studies before 2007 and have 120 academic credits.

  • You are currently studying and intend to complete 180 higher education credits.

  • You have previously been a member with us.

  • You work in a profession associated with the Saco unions or the Swedish Association of Health Professionals (Vårdförbundet). You are a manager, specialist, qualified administrator, or communicator, and your position is typically held by someone with an academic background.

Do you work in a qualified profession? Then you may be eligible for membership

You’re welcome to join Akademikernas a-kassa even if you don’t have at least 150 higher education credits or aren’t studying toward 180, as long as you belong to a profession organized by one of the Saco unions or the Swedish Association of Health Professionals (Vårdförbundet). Knowledge-intensive professions may also qualify for membership.

Is your profession not on our list?

Akademikernas a-kassa may still be the right fund for you if you hold a position that is typically filled by someone with a university degree (for example, a manager, specialist, or qualified administrator). In your application, describe your job and briefly explain what makes it an academic profession.
