Illness and work capacity

When you are sick, you cannot receive compensation from a-kassan. This applies regardless of whether you are entitled to sickness benefit or not. Sometimes, you may find yourself in a situation where Försäkringskassan considers you capable of working, while you personally feel completely unable to work.

Applying for a-kassa when you are no longer entitled to sickness benefit

To be eligible for a-kassa, you must be able to seek and accept work. You also need to have what is called work capacity, meaning you can take a job on the open labor market. For example, you must be able to apply for jobs, attend meetings with Arbetsförmedlingen, and participate in job-seeking activities.

If you consider yourself too ill to work, you are not eligible for a-kassa. If you have questions about your right to a-kassa after being denied sickness benefit, just give us a call.

On leave due to health reasons

If you have a job that you cannot return to for health reasons, you may still be eligible for a-kassa despite being employed.

The conditions are:

  • You have been granted unpaid leave, meaning you are not actively working and not entitled to salary from your employer.

  • Due to health reasons, you are unable to perform the job you were hired for or any other work with the employer.

  • Försäkringskassan has assessed that you have work capacity in relation to the general labor market.

  • You are able to seek and accept work.
