Assignments

Within the unemployment insurance system, the term “assignment” can be ambiguous, as some contractors are considered employees while others are classified as self-employed. For example, an assignment might involve consulting work that closely resembles hourly employment, or specific tasks in a project where the contractor operates independently and is responsible for their own fees, taxes, and social contributions. If you are classified as self-employed, you are not entitled to a-kassa compensation as long as the business is active.

Notify us if you take on an assignment

Assignments can be an obstacle to receiving unemployment compensation. If you're unsure how an assignment might affect your compensation eligibility, contact us — we’ll help clarify the terms. It’s important to reach out before accepting any assignment to understand how it may impact your right to compensation and to avoid incorrect payments.

Assignments as self-employment

If the assignment is considered self-employment, you are not entitled to a-kassa compensation until the assignment activity has completely ceased.

If you invoice the assignment using your own F- or F/A-tax certificate, or through a relative’s company, you are considered self-employed. Even if you use an invoicing service such as Frilans Finans or Cool Company — which handles taxes and social contributions — you may still be classified as self-employed in certain cases. Assignments as employment

If the assignment is considered employment, you may be eligible for compensation between assignments — and in some cases, even alongside the assignment if it is part-time.

For our investigation, we need to know:

  • When the assignment begins and ends

  • What you are being paid for and the basis for the compensation (e.g., hourly rate, fixed fee, per task)

This information helps determine how the assignment affects your eligibility for compensation.

How to apply

  • Request a written agreement and upload it to Mina sidor so we can assess your eligibility for compensation during the assignment and determine how it should be reported in your monthly application.

  • If no written agreement exists, you must provide the details yourself along with contact information for the client.
