After working abroad
Welcome to Sweden! If you have recently worked in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland and are now unemployed or at risk of becoming unemployed, it’s important to quickly apply for membership in Akademikernas a-kassa and register with Arbetsförmedlingen your first day of unemployment. Feel free to contact us even before your employment abroad ends — we’ll help you request the certificates needed to verify your previous employment and insurance period according to EU coordination rules for compensation.
Start with membership and Arbetsförmedlingen
Apply for membership in the unemployment fund as soon as you become unemployed — preferably even before returning to Sweden.
Register with Arbetsförmedlingen on your first day of unemployment. This cannot be done retroactively.

Apply for compensation
Fill in the forms Ansökan om ersättning and Fastställande av bosättningsstat in Mina sidor.
Submit your information to us so we can contact your country of employment. Your income details will be confirmed in a coordination certificate for compensation purposes.
Conditions for unemployment compensation after work within the EU/EEA/Switzerland
There are two ways in which work in another EU/EEA country or Switzerland can establish the right to unemployment compensation in Sweden. The first is if your most recent employment was in Sweden, and the second is if you were residing in Sweden while working in the other member country (cross-border worker or infrequent returnee).
Most recently worked in Sweden
If your last job was in Sweden, work in another EU/EEA country or Switzerland can form the basis for unemployment compensation in Sweden.
Cross-border worker
If you live in Sweden and work in another member country and return to Sweden at least once a week, the work can form the basis for unemployment compensation in Sweden.
Infrequent returnee
If you have not returned to Sweden at least once a week but still maintained strong ties to Sweden such that you are considered resident here, then work within the EU/EEA/Switzerland may establish the right to compensation in Sweden. Examples of assessment criteria include type of employment, housing situation, and where your family has lived.
We help you apply for certificates
Below you’ll find information about which documents each country of employment requires in order to issue the coordination certificate. Compile the information and upload it in My Pages, and we will contact the country of employment. If you have worked in a country not listed below, call us at 08-412 33 00 and we’ll assist you. We’re open every weekday from 8:30 to 16:30

How we calculate compensation after work within the EU/EEA
Your compensation is calculated based on the past twelve months. The income used to determine your compensation is based on your most recent salary.
