Sweden's largest a-kassa
We are Sweden’s largest a-kassa with more than 790,000 members across all professions, industries, and sectors. Both entrepreneurs and employees are members with us. We aim to contribute to a society where everyone has the opportunity to build a long, secure, and fulfilling working life.
Our head office is located in Stockholm and we have 160 employees – most of whom work with processing unemployment cases.
This is how it started
Akademikernas a-kassa has made working life in Sweden more secure since 1970. In the 1960s, there were 130,000 university graduates. Today, there are just over 1.6 million Swedes with post-secondary education. In 1965, student grants and loans from CSN were introduced, and Saco was concerned that this would lead to increased unemployment among university graduates. As a result, Akademikernas a-kassa was founded.
Our purpose, then as now, was to ensure that people who lose their jobs receive the benefits they are entitled to. We are always on the member’s side.

Correct, fast and respectful
Our values are based on the Swedish government’s core principles and our own key values: correct, fast and respectful. We who work here are proud to make a difference for people and to always keep our members in focus.
We want to contribute to a well-functioning social security system that provides individual freedom, a flexible labour market, and an equal society.
The people behind the a-kassa
-
Our mission
We are a non-political, non-profit organisation. We carry out public authority duties, and our operations are regulated by the Unemployment Insurance Act and the Act on Unemployment Insurance Funds.
-
Management
The a-kassa is led by a managing director, appointed by the board. The board is in turn elected by the general meeting, where members have the opportunity to influence the direction and decisions of the organisation.

9.7 out of 10
Members would recommend Akademikernas a-kassa to someone close to them. This result comes from our latest member survey.

Statistics
The number of people working, unemployed, and the amounts paid out affect both society and individuals. That’s why we produce reports about our members and the world around us.

From our managing director
Always on the member’s side
The work we do at Akademikernas a-kassa is meant to create value for our members and for society as a whole. The a-kassa provides breathing space for both individuals and employers during times of change.
Every day, we encounter our members’ concerns – often about not being able to keep their jobs. And sometimes about not being able to continue working at all. The anxiety that comes with a dismissal can be almost as difficult to handle as the loss of income. That’s why we don’t just pay out money – we also work to inform and guide, and sometimes it’s just as important to listen and show compassion.
Decisions must be communicated promptly to avoid unnecessary worry. Short processing times are crucial because unemployed individuals truly need their money. And if someone is not entitled to benefits, they need to know that even faster!
The a-kassa plays a vital role when people or the labour market want – or are forced – to transition. That’s why we work every day to satisfy our members and to encourage more people to join the a-kassa.
