Self-employed
Running your own business but currently have no income? Then you may be entitled to compensation. To receive it, you need to pause your business activities and verify your income — we’ll help you with the rest.

Classified as self-employed?
When you become unemployed, we first assess whether you should be classified as self-employed. This applies if you work in your own business, have significant influence, and run the company professionally and independently.

To-do list in Mina sidor
Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a personal to-do list showing what we need from you in order to process your compensation. As a case officer reviews your application, each item will be checked off one by one.

How to obtain income details
When you apply, you’ll receive a power of attorney form. Send it to Skatteverket so we can access your income information. You can also download a statement yourself. If you have a aktiebolag, we can retrieve the details.

Self-employment and compensation: What applies in different situations?
-
If you own a business where no one is currently working, it may be considered dormant for compensation purposes. If you're the sole owner, the process is usually simple — you confirm in Mina sidor that the business is dormant. You don’t need to deregister the company with Skatteverket or Bolagsverket; this only applies in relation to us.
If you’ve previously received compensation while the business was dormant, the business must have been active for at least three years before it can be considered dormant again. This applies to those applying for compensation from 2024 onwards.
If the business cannot be classified as dormant, you must fully close or exit the business to qualify for compensation.
-
What counts as a pause
Examples of situations where a self-employed person is considered unemployed and the business is regarded as dormant for compensation purposes:
All assignments have ended and there are no upcoming assignments.
Your client terminates the assignment before completion, and there is no agreement to resume it in the future. No other assignments are active in your business.
What does not count as a pause
Examples of situations where a self-employed person is not considered to have a dormant business:
You reduce the number of days and/or hours the business is open.
You have fewer customers or ongoing assignments.
You have one or more active assignments, even if there are periods without work — for example, an assignment with half a day of work once a month.
You are working on bids or active marketing.
You have assignments that are not completed or paused by the client, even if you’re not currently working on them.
You are preparing the business by purchasing goods, services, equipment, or machinery.
-
If you close down a profitable business, you may be disqualified from receiving compensation for 45 days, as it is considered a voluntary resignation. A business is regarded as profitable if its annual income exceeds four income base amounts. For example, if you’ve lost your only client and no longer have any income, please contact us — we’re here to help.
-
You may be considered self-employed if you work in a business owned by a close relative. To qualify, you must both perform work in the business and have significant influence over its operations.
Contact us and we’ll help assess your situation and advise which documents you need to submit.
-
If you are involved in a company solely for formal reasons and have not worked or are not working in the business, you are not considered self-employed under the rules for unemployment compensation.
-
If you want to invoice without having your own company, you can use services like Frilans Finans, Cool Company, Contigo, or Adamo, among others. These platforms allow you to invoice for your work as if you were employed, without needing to start your own business.
When using these services, it’s important that we review your situation together to determine whether your work should be classified as self-employment (as a business owner) or if you should be considered employed by the client. Good to know
How to qualify for compensation
You must have earned at least SEK 11,000 per month for four months within the 12-month qualification period to be eligible for compensation.
How we calculate
The amount you receive depends on your income over the past year. The maximum compensation is 27,200 SEK per month.
Haven’t worked the entire year?
If you've earned less than 11,000 SEK per month and have been ill, on parental leave, or studying full-time, we may extend the qualification period for compensation.
Received severance pay?
You are not entitled to compensation during the period you receive severance pay. However, it's important to register with Arbetsförmedlingen nonetheless.
Approved business?
In certain exceptional cases, you may be entitled to combine compensation with self-employment, provided the business was established before your unemployment.
Part-time work
Many people combine part-time employment with compensation. This can be done for up to 14 months. Income must be reported in the monthly application.
Five steps – how to apply
Get started with your compensation by following our 5 simple steps. The sooner we receive all the information, the sooner you’ll get your decision and your money.
-
1. Register with Arbetsförmedlingen
Make sure to register with Arbetsförmedlingen on your first day of unemployment. The registration is done online.
-
2. Log in and apply for compensation
Log in to Mina sidor on our website and submit your application. Once you provide your information, you’ll receive a personalized to-do list showing which details you need to complete. One of our case officers will then review your application, and if any information is missing, we’ll contact you.
-
3. Register your bank account
Register your bank account to have your compensation deposited directly into the account of your choice. This way, you avoid receiving a payment notice that costs money to redeem. You register your account with Swedbank’s account register.
-
4. Submit your monthly application
Submit your monthly application as soon as you have all your income details. The earliest you can receive your first payment is on the Thursday of the week following your compensation decision. Compensation is then paid every fourth Thursday of the month. Submit your monthly application no later than the 14th.
-
5. Submit your activity report to Arbetsförmedlingen
You must submit an activity report to Arbetsförmedlingen by the 14th of each month. This is done through their Mina sidor. Submitting the report on time and actively applying for a sufficient number of jobs are requirements for receiving compensation.
