When did you receive your compensation decision?

Employed

If you become unemployed, the income details registered with Skatteverket are used to meet the income requirement and to calculate the income that forms the basis for your compensation from the unemployment fund. The assessment is always based on a 12-month period, known as the qualification period. What information you need to include in your application depends on the reason you became unemployed.

Application and certificates

In Mina sidor, you fill in your application for compensation. There, you provide details about previous employment, any studies, periods of illness, and whether you have been on parental leave — all of which may affect your compensation.

To-do list in Mina sidor

Once you’ve completed your application, you’ll receive a personal to-do list showing if you need to support any information with certificates or provide further explanation.

Have you resigned?

If you resign, you may still be entitled to compensation after 45 suspension days and a qualifying deduction. Most union income insurance policies do not apply during a suspension. In some cases, you may be exempt from suspension.

The qualification period

The qualification period starts the month before you register and apply for compensation. It covers the past 12 months and can be extended if you earned less than SEK 11,000/month and were ill, studied full-time, or on parental leave.

Why did your employment end?

  1. If you are laid off due to redundancy, you are entitled to a notice period and are considered unemployed on the day your employment formally ends. If you are released from work duties during the notice period, you are still not considered unemployed — and compensation does not begin until the employment officially ends.

  2. If you are dismissed, your employment is terminated immediately without a notice period. You are not entitled to salary or any other employment-related compensation.

If the dismissal is due to inappropriate conduct, you will be suspended from receiving compensation for 45 days. Inappropriate conduct may include, for example, repeated absence without valid reason or committing a criminal offense against the employer.

  3. If you resign from your job, you may still be entitled to compensation from the unemployment fund. If there are valid reasons for your resignation, such as certified health issues or workplace harassment, you may receive compensation from your first day of unemployment.

However, it is most common to be suspended from compensation after a voluntary resignation. The suspension lasts for 45 compensation days, and after 112 calendar days (16 weeks of full-time unemployment), the suspension period is considered completed even if you haven’t reached 45 compensation days.

A suspension may affect your right to union income insurance — check with your union for details. Continue submitting your monthly application in Mina sidor throughout the suspension period. After the suspension, a qualifying deduction is made equivalent to the value of two compensation days.

To count benefit days, you must either:

    • be unemployed, registered with Arbetsförmedlingen, and actively seeking work, or

    • have earned income from employment.

  4. Unemployment benefits apply in cases of involuntary unemployment.

To be entitled to compensation from the unemployment fund, your unemployment must be involuntary. This means you cannot have chosen to reduce your working hours yourself.

If you have resigned from part of your employment or voluntarily reduced your hours, you are not considered unemployed and therefore not eligible for compensation. However, if you have been laid off from part-time work, you may be entitled to compensation for the lost income.

  5. Has your employer gone bankrupt?

If you become unemployed due to your employer’s bankruptcy, you are often entitled to state wage guarantee. You should register with Arbetsförmedlingen the day after your right to wage guarantee ends. From that day, you are considered unemployed in terms of compensation.

  6. Dismissal due to personal reasons

If you are dismissed for personal reasons, you may be suspended from receiving compensation for 45 compensation days. To assess your case, we require a statement from your employer explaining the reason for the dismissal and whether a reassignment was offered.

  7. Compensation after a probationary period

A probationary position is a fixed-term employment that the employer can terminate at any time without stating a reason. Its purpose is to allow the employer to evaluate the employee before offering a permanent position.

The employee also has the right to end the probationary employment early. If you choose to terminate the position yourself, it is considered a voluntary resignation and may result in a suspension from compensation for 45 days.

If the employer ends the probationary employment, it is treated as a dismissal and does not lead to a suspension from compensation. The employer must notify you of the termination at least 14 days before the probationary period ends.

  8. When a fixed-term employment ends

If you have had a fixed-term employment, you should register with Arbetsförmedlingen on the first day after the employment has ended.

No notice of termination is required to end a fixed-term employment — it automatically ends on the date stated in the employment contract. In most cases, the employer cannot terminate the contract early. Compensation may be available from the day you are considered unemployed.

  9. If you and your employer have agreed to end your employment and you receive severance pay, you are considered employed during the period that the compensation covers. This period is calculated by dividing the severance amount by your average monthly income.

To determine the time period the severance pay is deemed to cover, you can submit a compensation application and we will calculate it for you. If you are ill or on parental leave, it is still important to register with Arbetsförmedlingen to maintain your sickness benefit qualifying income (SGI) with Försäkringskassan.
